Power Department Official Caught on Camera Allegedly Demanding Bribe in Kanpur Dehat

A video allegedly showing Kanpur Dehat power department SDO Vivek Pandey demanding a ₹1,000 bribe for an electricity connection has gone viral, prompting public outcry and an official inquiry. Authorities have launched an investigation as the incident raises fresh concerns about corruption within the electricity department.

A fresh corruption controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district after a video surfaced online allegedly showing a senior electricity department official soliciting a bribe. The clip, which rapidly spread across social media platforms, purportedly features Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Vivek Pandey demanding ₹1,000 in exchange for providing an electricity connection in the Maitha area.

According to preliminary information, the official was reportedly negotiating the payment while speaking to a local consumer seeking a connection. As the footage circulated widely, it triggered public outrage in the region and raised renewed concerns about systemic irregularities within the power supply department.

Local authorities have since acknowledged the video and initiated an inquiry to verify its authenticity and determine the circumstances surrounding the exchange. Departmental officials have stated that appropriate action will follow once the investigation establishes the facts and confirms whether the conduct in the video constitutes a violation of service rules or anticorruption laws.

The incident has intensified long-standing public frustration over alleged malpractices within utility services across rural Uttar Pradesh. As the probe progresses, residents and watchdog groups are urging the administration to ensure transparency and take decisive action, underscoring the broader need for accountability to restore public confidence in essential service departments.
